Sir Steve Redgrave
Sir Steve Redgrave, Gold Medal winner in 5 consecutive Olympic games. That’s winning gold in the Olympics for 20 years. Not many people can boast winning an Olympic Gold, even fewer can boast that they have won several medals, and fewer still have won consecutive years, so Sir Steve Redgrave is one in a million. (Possibly the only person who has achieved such a record?? – I haven’t checked.)
On this shoot for Specsavers, we were at a location house in Highgate. Nice modern house and spacious for London standards, but when Sir Steve Redgrave enters, it all seems small. Rowers are often tall and Sir Steve was no exception.
When I mentioned that I lived in Hackney he reminisced having rowed at Lea Valley rowing club, near Springfield Park a long time ago. Now a nice place where I sometimes find myself if I look for some country side in London, but he talked about a time when they rowed and their oars used to strike dead dogs floating in the river. He also remembered the time when they found two skinned bears, presumably from the touring circus near by. Different times, as it now is a place for local middle-class joggers and birdwatchers, moored hipster boats and dog walkers, as well as a much more gentrified rowing club.
