I admire people who have ventured down the avenue of complete veganism. In this cover shoot for OFM we looked at people from different walks of life that have converted into becoming vegans. The cool, fun Esme from Deserted Cactus/London Afro Vegan was the cover star and we wanted to give her a revolutionary image, as the Jackie Brown of the new movement of vegan eating. Inside we had Emily Deary from Vegan Build. She works with a team of builders who work on bigger projects, and cooks up a vegan lunch for all the builders and has written the cook book Vegan Build. Then Shea Jozana, a personal trainer who turned vegan a few years ago and has never looked back and Darren Jones, a Labour politician, MP for Bristol who was turned to vegan after having heard the arguments against the meat industry and its sustainability. “Young Vegans”, a vegan pie cafe in Camden, who make the most amazing pies to replace your Shepherds and Steak and Ale pies. Everyone included in this feature had interesting and individual stories. The shoot, started with the builders and I had a last minute idea of creating an image that would give a nod to the well known image of the builders in New York, working on the Rockefeller Centre, having a lunch break above the NY sky line. I then wanted to continue to get options that gave a hint to well known imagery. The Young Vegans were the new “American Gothic”, Darren was convinced to take the cherry tomato and wear it like a revolutionary, Esme was seated in her own cafe as if she was in Edward Hopper’s “Woman Drinking Coffee” painting and Shea Jozana Showed 4 different parts of a skipping rope jump to give a little wink to Muybridge.
