To be able to photograph someone for the third time means that the uncertainties some people can have about a photographer’s ability and intentions are put behind them and the subject and enter the shoot with full confidence. And that is exactly where we started this shoot with Jo Brand. We had a 15 min catch up, talking about what’s been going on as well as exchanging drama series tip offs and I managed to slip in a recommendation for the Norwegian film Troll Hunter too.
Apart from Jo’s comedy she is also promoting her own series “Damned”, which she has co written and is acting as a social worker. She’s known for being outspoken and was recently cheered for silencing Ian Hislop during ‘Have I Got News For You’ when he made some unfavourable comment on the issue of female harassment. That was the idea behind the shoot – outspoken woman breaking though. We had discussed having her break out of a backdrop but this had bothered me a little as I felt it had been done before… many times. It was only moments before the shoot that it struck me that this image would be a lot more interesting if we filled the image with hands and feet, breaking through too, making it look like Jo had been stretched out in a contortionist style pose. (I would like to emphasise that Jo did not get harmed during the shoot and has since been put together again with relative ease using superglue and tape.)
