It’s hard not to turn up on a shoot with a film critic, holding a glass of whisky, and not think about the film Lost in Translation. In fact, so much so that I find myself cringing when giving any direction, in case I become that photographer who’s constantly misunderstood as I give senseless directions with a mouth full of cliches. This shoot with Jason Solomon was a collaboration with The Times and Glenlivet. We were looking for that ‘Cool Cat’ pose, which Jason brought to the table with little effort. It made me think that maybe, having picked apart at all these films, Jason has the upper hand by being able to live each role himself. The characters maybe intravenously injected into Jason Solomon’s veins without having to go through the painful character acting that Robert De Niro does to build up his roll as an intimidating mercenary in Taxi Driver, looking in the mirror saying “Are you talkin’ to me?!” One thing is for sure – I’d give Jason 5 stars for Jason’s ability to nail down the “Cool Cat whisky drinking pose”.
